About the Hip-Hop Therapy Project, LLC:
The Hip-Hop Therapy Project, LLC (HHTP) supports and promotes individuals
and entities that utilize Hip-Hop music and culture, along with other therapeutic
concepts, to serve as a culturally sensitive catalyst for personal and collective
change by Engaging, Educating, Understanding, Healing, and Uniting those who
are most affected by, embrace, embody, and enjoy Hip-Hip. HHTP also serves
as a mental, emotional, behavioral, and social resource for agencies,
organizations, industries, and communities that seek to reach out and engage
youth and young adult populations.
Founded by Nakeyshaey M. Tillie-Allen in 2004, the Project recognized how in
the last 30 years that Hip-Hop music and culture has become a pervasive part of
our overall mainstream society. Since its established inception in the 1970's in
the City of New Your, Hip-Hop has since transcended those boundaries and has
moved into communities all over the world.
Hip-Hop is often described as a young urban American mainstream culture and
is often viewed as the "voice of a generation". It is a tool that allows those to be
seen and heard that might not have been other wise heard in any other arena or
venue. The Hip-Hop Therapy Project recognizes that value of Hip-Hop, as well
as its mass appeal and staying power, and reaches out to those who are most
affected by Hip-Hop to teach, model, advocate, and demonstrate the art of
healing from "story telling" and the "sharing of ones story".
Although Hip-Hop is a diverse community and culture, it is mostly known for
its connection with Rap musicians. The Hip-Hop Therapy Project connects with
that component of Hip-Hop and uses its influence with Hip-Hop's everyday
people that have everyday life issues and struggles to engage them in learning
how to address those life issues and struggles. It also employs the support of
qualified helping professional who utilize the Hip-Hop Therapy ® approach with
said populations.
Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space between the notes and curl my back to the loneliness. -
